The expanded and enhanced online catalogue James Ensor: The Temptation of Saint Anthony is published in conjunction with a print catalogue of the same name and an exhibition titled Temptation: The Demons of James Ensor, organized by and presented at the Art Institute of Chicago from November 23, 2014, to January 25, 2015. Stories, ritual performances, and oral histories say about being Alutiiq, both now. Kiatagmiut (Yup'ik speakers), and another recent group of. Yup'ik immigrants.

Theodore Roosevelt, born in New York City, New York, on 27 October 1858, his father’s family of New York (Knickerbocker) and his mother’s of Georgian (Scotch) heritage. Despite a childhood of wealth and privilege, Roosevelt struggled against asthma, triumphing over the infirmity by strengthening his body through sheer self will, teaching himself to ride, box, and shoot. Young Roosevelt viewed President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral procession from an upstairs window of his grandfather's house on Union Square in New York City, an experience that profoundly impacted him. His father Theodore “Thee” died from stomach cancer on 9 February 1878. Privately tutored, Roosevelt attended Harvard University, where he turned to the writing of history while preparing to study law, graduating magna cum laude on 30 June 1880. That year proved a happier one for Roosevelt as he also married Alice H. Lee of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, on his 22nd birthday.

Two years later, he published his Naval War of 1812, which historians still regard as a seminal study of the subject. That same year 1882, Roosevelt ran as an independent Republican for the state legislature and the people elected him to represent New York’s 21st District. Roosevelt quickly won renown as a champion of better government, and became minority leader the following year. After labor activist Samuel Gompers took Roosevelt on a tour of New York City tenements that year, he worked to enact legislation to ease the dreadful living conditions he witnessed. The following year, Roosevelt led the Assembly itself. On 14 February 1884, however, his mother Martha B.

“Mittie” and his first wife Alice both died on the same day (from typhoid fever and Bright’s Disease, a chronic kidney infection, respectively). The devastated man penned a single line in his diary for that terrible day: “The light has gone out of my life.” The grieving Roosevelt spent considerable time during the subsequent two years on his ranch in the Badlands of Dakota Territory, where he mastered his sorrow as he lived in the saddle, driving cattle and hunting big game. On a visit to London, England, his prospects brightened, when he married longtime friend Edith K.

Carow on 2 December 1886. Roosevelt began six years on the Civil Service Commission in 1889, during which he opposed corruption in the dispensing of public offices. Tragedy again struck him when his brother Elliott, the father of future First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, died on 14 August 1894. In 1895, he resigned from that commission to become president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In 1897, President William McKinley, Jr., appointed Roosevelt to the post of Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

Roosevelt strengthened the service and he prepared it for war against the Spanish, who possessed a large, but decaying colonial empire, his work enabling the fleet to begin the war in a condition of preparedness. Roosevelt invited a group of influential men of industry and government to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, on the evening of 2 June of that year. There he delivered one of the most stirring speeches of his career, adopting as his opening point George Washington’s precept, “To be prepared for war is the most effectual means to promote peace.” The exuberant secretary pounded home the theme of conflict and the need for Americans to establish themselves in the global arena, and he inspired his audience toward intervention against the Spaniards. When Taft gained his party’s banner, Roosevelt led his followers from the Grand Old Party to form the Progressive Party. At one point he remarked to reporters that he felt as fit as a bull moose, and the media so labeled the party. The Republican split gave victory to the Democrats, and Woodrow Wilson attained the presidency in March 1913.

Roosevelt returned to retirement and resumed writing and traveling, including a trip through the Brazilian wilderness, evincing interests in zoology and history. Ever the sportsman and patriot, he expressed himself often on how intertwined he considered the two themes: “A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.” He professed neutrality at the outbreak of World War I but quickly became pro-Allied. His outspoken criticism of Wilson’s neutrality sought to arouse the country to what he viewed as a struggle between democracy and Germanic imperialism. The Progressives nominated him for the presidential ticket on 10 June 1916, but he declined and eventually backed Charles E. While Americans debated entering the war the following February, Roosevelt applied to Wilson for permission to raise and command a division of volunteers, but the President did not respond until May, rejecting the offer. His family participated fully in the war effort with all four sons volunteering for service, and his daughter Ethel served as a Red Cross nurse. Archie was severely wounded and the French awarded him the Croix de Guerre, their highest decoration; the British awarded Kermit the Military Cross and he served with distinction during the fighting in the Meuse-Argonne offensive; the Germans gassed Theodore, Jr., at Cantigny but he survived to receive the Medal of Honor during World War II; but Quentin crashed and died while flying as a pilot with the Army’s 95th Aero Squadron on 14 July 1918.

Roosevelt refused the Republican nomination for the governorship of New York in July 1918, though he hoped to run again for the presidency in 1920. He died peacefully in his sleep from a coronary embolism (an arterial blood clot) at his home at Sagamore Hill, on 6 January 1919. The profile of Theodore Roosevelt on the ship’s seal originates from a photograph of the President addressing the people of Asheville, N.C. He shows a tenacious and determined look, an expression that indicates a willingness to use force if required. The Latin phrase Qui Plantavit Curabit is the Theodore Roosevelt family motto which may be translated as “He who has planted will preserve.” Simplistically stated, the mission of the ship is to be prepared to preserve the peace and freedom of the Republic.

October 27th is the President’s date of birth, and additionally, is celebrated as Navy Day—and is the date of the launching of Theodore Roosevelt. USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 contains 26 actual characters, representative of her namesake’s tenure as the 26th president. The design of the roses in the name ring of the seal derives from the family’s coat of arms, which shows a field of roses. Roosevelt loosely translates as “field of roses” in Dutch.
